What is an EKG?

An EKG is a screening test to evaluate your heart function. It records the electrical signals in your heart, yielding two types of information:

Electrical activity intervals

The timing of your heart’s electrical activity — how long it takes for signals to travel through the heart muscle — reveals whether your heart’s activity pattern is too slow, too fast, or sporadic. 

Amount of electrical activity

An EKG measures the overall level of electrical activity inside your heart. This information can determine whether you have an enlarged heart or if your heart’s working too hard.

When might I need an EKG?

You might need an EKG if you’re having symptoms such as:

• Heart palpitations
• Breathing difficulties
• Dizziness
• Fatigue

EKGs can detect problems like coronary artery disease, prior heart attacks, and an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia). 

You could also need an EKG if you have heart disease and are trying a new treatment approach, such as a pacemaker. The EKG can show your provider how well the pacemaker works and help determine future treatment plans. 

If you’re at risk for heart disease or an enlarged heart, you may need an EKG during your annual physical exam. Athletes, the elderly, and those with a personal or family history of heart disease might also benefit from an EKG.

What can I expect during my EKG?

Your provider positions small electrodes at various points on your chest, arms, and legs; you may need to remove your clothing above your waist for the procedure. You then lie still and silent for a few minutes so the electrodes can assess your heart’s activity with peak accuracy. 

The electrodes relay the information gathered to a nearby computer through thin wires. The test is painless and takes just a few minutes. When it’s over, your provider removes the electrodes, and you can return to your regular activities. 

Your provider may discuss the results with you right after the test or at a follow-up appointment in the near future. Depending on the results, you may need additional testing, such as an echocardiogram.
