What is cancer screening?

Cancer screening is testing to detect signs of cancer. There are several types of routine cancer screening for adults, including screening for breast, cervical, colon, lung, and prostate cancers. But 71% of cancers occur due to those not routinely screened for.

To better detect a wide range of cancers early, Premiere Medical Center offers Galleri multi-cancer early detection test, a blood test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer in the earliest stages.

Who needs cancer screening?

Cancer screening occurs on a case-by-case basis. Adults over 50 are 13 times more likely than younger people to develop cancer, so you may need to undergo the Galleri test as part of your annual physical or wellness checkup starting around that age.

The Galleri multi-cancer early detection test supplements routine cancer tests such as mammograms, Pap smears, and colonoscopies.

How do cancer screening blood tests work?

The Galleri test couldn’t be simpler: Your provider performs a quick blood draw in the Premiere Medical Center office. Your blood sample goes to the GRAIL laboratory, which uses the latest science and DNA sequencing technology to check for signs of cancer.

The Galleri test looks for altered DNA. While every cell within your body emits DNA, cancer cell DNA looks different. The test can detect that abnormal DNA and determine where it came from within your body. Types of cancer this test can detect include:

  • Appendix
  • Bladder
  • Breast
  • Bone
  • Cervix
  • Colon
  • Esophagus
  • Gallbladder
  • Kidney
  • Liver
  • Lung
  • Melanoma (skin)
  • Ovary
  • Pancreas
  • Penis
  • Prostate
  • Small intestine
  • Stomach
  • Uterus
  • Vagina

You can expect to receive results about two weeks after your blood draw.

What happens after I get my cancer screening results?

When you get your Galleri test results, your provider discusses what the results mean for you. Fortunately, about 99% of people who take the Galleri test receive a result of “no cancer signal detected.”

Cancer screening can detect cancers before they’re in the advanced stages, when they’re more difficult to treat. So if you get a “cancer signal detected” result, you can undergo diagnostic testing and treat the disease immediately, when treatment is most effective.
